So you want to get into fitness? Good for you! In fact, studies continue to link exercise to improved mental health, not to mention a reduced risk of many diseases.

But your first time at the gym can be daunting, and it’s hard to know where to start. Don’t worry! We’ve put together some tips for first-time gym-goers, so you can exercise with ease.

1. Ask for an induction

Nobody knows your gym like its staff. If it’s not already compulsory, ask for an induction to get yourself acquainted with the equipment.

Usually an induction involves a simple tour of the gym, with some demonstrations of the equipment and machines. You’ll learn how to operate and adjust the gym equipment to fit your needs.

It is also a good idea to ask staff for some help with planning a beginner gym workout routine. After all, they’re there to help you!

2. Look the part

Do you need to dress like a fitness model? No. Do you need breathable clothes that let you move freely? Yes. All you need to get started is a t-shirt and a loose pair of lightweight shorts.

Also, if you’re planning on doing any running, you’ll need a good pair of running shoes. Check out some good ones here. Otherwise, any pair of sneakers works fine.

3. Bring the essentials

This part is super straightforward. You don’t need any high-tech gym gear! Bring a towel, for wiping down the equipment after you’ve used it. A refillable water bottle and pair of headphones are also important.

If you’re planning on walking/running to the gym, bring a pair of indoor sneakers to change into. There’s nothing worse than walking all that way and getting sent home because of your shoes.

4. Eat and drink well

Nutrition is an essential part of staying in shape. While exercise is important, it shouldn’t be the only aspect of your fitness journey.

Make sure you’re maintaining a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables, carbs, and protein. These food groups will allow you to lose fat, while also gaining muscle.

Still, many people think they are consuming a nutritious diet, while missing out on essential micro-nutrients. This is why we recommend taking dietary supplements in order to achieve the best results possible.

In fact, studies have linked vitamin D supplementation with an improvement in strength of up to 18%! Check out our range of dietary supplements, including vitamin D, here.

5. Nobody is judging you

We were all beginners once. Everyone has had those first-time-at-the-gym nerves.

And trust me: everyone around you is way too focused on their own workout to think about yours.

So, it’s time to put on some tunes, settle onto your first exercise machine, and get moving. And remember, the most important part is turning up.
